Julia Ostertag shot her first experimental films in the early 90ies.
She studied with underground film icon Birgit Hein at Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig, Germany.
Julia Ostertag is director, cinematographer and editor and runs her own one-woman-film production.
Her films focus on alternative life styles, subculture, music, gender roles, female sexuality and queer topics.
They have been screened and awarded at international film festivals all over the world.
Julia Ostertag finished her studies at Art School Braunschweig with the short film „Sexjunkie“ in 2004. This personal sexuality-exploring piece also got awarded at the 1st Pornfilmfest Berlin, and was suggested for Best Short Film Germany 2003. During her travels in the US with „Sexjunkie“ sponsored by Goethe Institute Julia Ostertag shot a video diary called „NO american dream“ (2004), which was also presented at Leipzig Documentary Festival and in China. In 2003 she also started working on her first feature documentary about Drag Queens and transgendered persons. This brought her to Berlin, where she lives since 2005. „Gender X“ (72min., 2005) premiered at Panorama/Berlinale in 2005, ran the festival circuit and won the Audience Award in Mix Film Fest Brasil Sao Paulo 2006. In 2006 and 2007 Julia Ostertag shot the apocalyptic underground feature SAILA - PUNK DYSTOPIA in abandoned warehouses with performance artists and squatters from the Berlin Underground. This experimental film about a young woman living in a wasteland seducing men to have erotic encounters and make them disappear after won the Best Feature Award at Minneapolis Underground Film Festival and Best Experimental Film Award in Female Eye Film Fest Toronto and received much attention from the international film press. In 2008 Julia Ostertag met Sarah and Cindy from queer electro hip hop band "Scream Club" in Berlin and they started to work on a long term documentary together. In 2009 Julia Ostertag released „Under The Red Umbrella“ - a short portrait about a queer anarchist sex worker, which has been screened internationally at film festivals and sex workers conventions. Around the same time, Julia Ostertag and co-director Francesca Araiza Andrade started traveling together all over Europe to shoot the documentary „Noise & Resistance“ about today´s international DIY punk scene. This film is distributed by „Neue Visionen Filmverleih“ and has been screened in over 50 different cinemas in Germany 2011. It got screened at festivals and alternative cinemas on every continent and was televised by arte in early 2013. 2013 Julia Ostertag released her music documentary "And You Belong" with the support of co-producer Jürgen Brüning. It premiered at Fringe! Fest London and traveled the festival circuit from Australia over Jakarta to San Francisco and Seattle. It was released on DVD by GMfilms. Right now Julia Ostertag is writing an experimental film script about a bored girl who finds a parallel universe under the streets of Berlin where she becomes part of a magic cult and their spiderweb of magic rituals.
